If you haven't read the read.me file please do so now.
Showbm is a file viewer for windows picture files.
It will display bitmaps, rle files, and icons stored as .ico files
It is also rather small and relatively fast compared to most graphics
programs since all it does is display windows native formats. No
edit capabilities or gif or jpeg support. Just a tiny (9.3k) little
viewer that gets the picture on the screen quickly. No muss, no fuss.
Showbm is simple to use.
Run with a command line parameter it pops up a window with the
picture displayed in it (if you gave it a valid picture file)
Example: the command line : showbm c:\windows\arches.bmp
results in a window showing the arches bitmap which comes
with windows. The full path is not needed either. If you
are in the windows directory showbm arches.bmp would work
as well.
Run without a command line parameter it pops up an empty box with a
menu bar labeled "file" and "help".
The Help menu gives access to several small screens of possibly
useful information. It does not substitute for reading this file.
Under the file menu you have:
Open, which pops up a standard windows file open box to
allow you to open a new picture file.
Shrink to fit, which shrinks the currently displayed picture
down enough to fit on the screen.
And of course, Exit, which does the expected.
To get the most out of showbm you might wish to associate the .bmp,
.rle, and .ico extentions with showbm instead of the default association
with paint brush (which loads much to slow for simple viewing)
This is done by opening file manager, clicking file, then
associate, then typing the extention in the box labeled files with
extention (.bmp or .rle for example), then type the path and
filename of showbm.exe in the box labeled associate with or use the
browse button to find showbm.exe, then hit ok. repeate for each
extention you wish to associate. If you know what you are doing you
can also do this by editing win.ini.
There are several shortcuts built into showbm:
A left mouse click in the picture area brings up the file open box.
A right mouse click in the picture area exits showbm.
Control+O brings up the file open box.
Control+S shrinks the graphic to fit on the screen.
Control+Z exits showbm.
